Leeds United goalkeeper Joel Robles could be in line for a surprise return to former club Everton, according to Alan Nixon.
The 32-year-old Spaniard arrived at Elland Road last summer on a free transfer after his contract with Real Betis expired and made four Premier League appearances.
However, according to EFL transfer guru Nixon, he could be set for a surprising move back to Merseyside after previously leaving The Toffees in 2018.
Writing for The Sun on Saturday evening, Nixon claimed that Everton want Robles to provide cover for Jordan Pickford after Asmir Begovic was released.
The Spaniard’s contract at Elland Road is set to expire and he impressed after being installed as Leeds’ starting ‘keeper during Sam Allardyce’s ill-fated spell in charge.
Short on numbers
A potential departure for Robles could spark a goalkeeping crisis for The Whites as French star Illan Meslier also looks bound for the exit door.
In an interview with French outlet RMC on Sunday evening, the 23-year-old suggested that he is angling for a move away from Elland Road.
“It’s complicated when we are in the situation we are in. We no longer have a coach, our club is being bought out by the 49ers Group, there are a lot of unknowns.
“Officially, I still belong to Leeds. I will have to think about what could be the best project.”
Any incoming Leeds manager could therefore be forced into scouting for two goalkeepers, a position that is looking increasingly in demand this summer.
One option could potentially be Liverpool’s Caoimihn Kelleher, with the Irish international ready to leave Liverpool this summer according to a report from The Athletic on 23 May.
The report outlined how Liverpool are reluctant to lose the talented young ‘keeper, so a loan move to Elland Road may suit all parties.
